Why Many Developers Hate ASP NET and Why Theyre Wrong

It’s kind of like chrootjailing a process, except that a container gets its own file system to make it look like a server using UnionFS. Be it on the server side, where languages like PHP, Ruby, Python, and Perl live, or in the browser with JavaScript, dynamic languages are the backbone of the web. It’s not that these languages are better, but they are https://globalcloudteam.com/ quickly adopted because dynamic languages are typically easier to learn and understand than statically typed languages. So cost isn’t really a problem, but naysayers will then say ASP.NET is only suitable for enterprise-class websites as opposed to your personal site. They supposedly don’t give anything away for free, but that’s exactly what they do.

Try throwing an exception in GetSomeDataAsync and compare the stack traces. 1.Razor supports mobile, and both are optimized and fast in their own way. Razor optimizes code by not using a tree like MVC does.

If you want to create highly structured masterpieces of object oriented design, you can. But you can also build sites with the same kind of “scripting” mentality that thrives in PHP. The point is, ASP.NET development is flexible enough to fit your needs, and you can choose the development approach that best fits you. In business, there are many factors that make up the “cost” of a product.

Multiple Approaches

Drag-and-drop server controls and auto-deployment are only a couple of the features this versatile tool offers. A common performance problem in ASP.NET Core apps is blocking calls that could be asynchronous. Many synchronous blocking calls lead to Thread Pool starvation and degraded response times. ASP.NET Core apps should be designed to process many requests simultaneously. Asynchronous APIs allow a small pool of threads to handle thousands of concurrent requests by not waiting on blocking calls.

  • If you have independent apps in PC,Phones tablet, etc, you could just use React and core web api which is front-end and back-end separation.
  • ASP.NET is an open source, server-side web application framework created by Microsoft that runs on Windows and was started in the early 2000s.
  • This gives the websites a lot of strength and versatility.
  • Not only this, creating other stuff that is a part of programming is really easy and fast in ASP.NET relative to other programming languages.
  • If you want to create highly structured masterpieces of object oriented design, you can.

Everything you need to develop ASP.NET applications (or .NET apps in general) can be obtained without spending a dime. However, if these apps were built on the .Net Framework instead, you wouldn’t have to do this. You could still use web deploy to move them onto the servers. Maybe you’ve got some other existing IIS configuration settings that you don’t want to migrate.

The only need to use the ‘red path’ is when some required NuGet packages are not ported to .NET Core. Find centralized, trusted content and collaborate around the technologies you use most. You have many more options, if you ever fall into trouble, there are many communities of other developers that like to help you out, for example CodeProject, Stack Overflow, Social MSDN Forums, etc. The above code is enough, and is not the smallest limit ASP.NET can reach, it can accept the least amount of code to be a single element or nothing.

ASP.NET applications can use all of the popular databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB, Postgres, MongoDB and CouchDB. While Microsoft SQL Server can require expensive software licenses for complex deployments, the free Express version is suitable for the vast majority of websites. All of the other databases mentioned here are free and open source. In addition to an IDE, websites require web application server software and a hosting server. IIS is available for all versions of Microsoft Windows at no additional cost.

You probably have, and if you haven’t, it’s a Q&A website for developers . Its an invaluable resource, and one I find myself visiting quite often. I have never seen anyone do that, and neither should anyone do it.

Those developers typically rely on misconceptions or flat out hatred to base their opinion, and they do a disservice to others looking to learn a new technology and to the platform itself. So, let’s examine these excuses and add a dose of reality on why you shouldn’t listen to the rabble and give ASP.NET a try. C# and other .NET languages let you create your own modules, use some library tools from MSDN and create your own web applications.

Because C# is a static language, the type checking is performed by the compiler—not by you. So, if you were to call this method, pass a string as one of the arguments, like add(“hello”, 123), and attempt to compile the code, the compiler will stop the build process and alert you to the error. Chances are, however, you wouldn’t even try to compile the code because Visual Studio performs its own type and syntax checking; the IDE will warn you of errors before you even try to compile . What type of database to use is an important decision when developing a web application.

The assumption in the answer as I understand is, you are making an application and not a library. If you are developing a library then the answer changes a bit as that point you need to decide first hand what TFM’s you need to target aka the .NET standard. At that point your library can then target .Net Core or the full .Net framework alike depending on what api’s your library need. The only benefit you don’t have if you choose the full .NET framework over .NET Core is being cross platform. All the other benefits of deployment, modularization, docker, performance, etc…

Much of the code running on the site is open sourced, and they often provide information regarding the network in general. In a March 2011 blog post, Kyle Brandt provided an overview of the technology powering the Stack Exchange Network, as well as the traffic the network gets. Keep in mind this information is regarding the entire Stack Exchange Network. Second, you don’t have to fall into the “highly structured or die” mentality.

For all intents and purposes, .NET has been the development platform for Microsoft Windows environments over the past ten years. But if I still can’t persuade you to give C# a try, ASP.NET sites do not have to be written in C# (or even VB.NET… but who would want to do that?). There are .NET-enabled versions of PHP, Ruby, Python, and PERL that you can use to write ASP.NET sites with, and they are just as dynamic as usual thanks to the Dynamic Language Runtime, a feature of .NET 4. So while I recommend anyone picking up ASP.NET to learn C#, you don’t have to leave your comfort zone if you don’t want to .

When to use ASP.NET MVC vs. ASP.NET Web Forms?

You can create as many projects as you want, and run on the same server. I am a student of Computer Science and it’s my hobby to ask questions related to technology, and around me, there are some highly professional developers studying Software Engineering in the University. I will try to explain why one should use ASP.NET over other web programming frameworks for web scripting and web application programming.

Windows hosting servers are usually more expensive than comparable Linux servers, which are commonly used to run PHP, JavaScript and Ruby applications. However, with the release of ASP.NET Core in 2016, ASP.NET applications are no longer asp net usage reliant on IIS and can now be hosted on Linux and MacOS as well as Windows. Continuous integration and continuous delivery can make the software process easy and enjoyable, but problems in the CI or CD pipeline can be hard to diagnose.

So due to this, there is no huge difference between PHP and ASP.NET. If you’re having a small business, you can always still use the Web Pages, to develop it. ASP.NET allows you to use MVC framework model in which you develop a web application, and ASP.NET lets you totally change the way the application is controlled and used. You can edit Models, Controllers and Views to change the content of the application, you can set your own variables and so on. ASP.NET itself is a basic implementation of the .NET Framework over Internet services and the websites.

Blocking threads can lead to thread pool starvation. Call data access, I/O, and long-running operations APIs asynchronously if an asynchronous API is available. Do not use Task.Run to make a synchronus API asynchronous. Well, async await is so popular, because it handles nicely various scenarios, i.e. when there’s no need to run asynchronously, it executes synchronously. But you need to be aware of some overhead, i.e. creating states machine when using that pattern. All clients side parts will handled by ReactJS, no razor views, you can have only one to reference your reacts application or simply you can reference it using plain html page.

Reasons To Use Docker with ASP.NET

After compilation, the code can be executed over and over by the .Net platform very quickly. Docker containers use the host machine’s resources, but they have their own runtime environment. They have their own copy of (a slimmed-down version) the operating system’s user space. This means you can secure a container much in the same way you secure a traditional machine because it kind of is a real machine.
